3) Prices of Foreign Goods: Joining a monetary union means giving up independent monetary policy and, with it, a sizeable slice of national sovereignty. The member country can no longer control its the money supply, its inflation or interest rates, or its foreign exchange rates. Monetary policy is transferred to a central monetary authority or monetary policy, for instance. With this type of transaction an swap of currencies is made. The current market price is the spot rate, which is also some times called the benchmark price. This types of swaps are not required to resolved right away. There is a value or settlement date and is usually the second day after the deal has been made. This period permits the time required to exchange funds from one bank account to another which could be located anywhere in the world.The Euro feels like a novelty - but it is not. It was preceded by quite a few Monetary Unions in Europe and outside it. Is government growing and expanding to much? New growth by developing departments, and creating unnecessary programs, all costs money.
